Luis Antonio Valencia Mosquera is a retired Ecuadorian footballer celebrated for his versatility, power, and leadership on the field. Born on August 4, 1985, in Nueva Loja, Ecuador, Valencia began his career with Ecuador’s El Nacional before moving to Villarreal in Spain. He initially struggled in La Liga but found his footing in the Premier League with Wigan Athletic, where his impressive performances attracted Manchester United.
In 2009, United signed Valencia, where he played a critical role for a decade, adapting from a winger to a reliable right-back. Known for his remarkable speed, work ethic, and crossing ability, he won two Premier League titles (2010–11, 2012–13), two League Cups, the FA Cup in 2016, and the UEFA Europa League in 2017. United recognized his leadership, appointing him club captain in his final season, making him one of the few non-British captains in United’s history.
Internationally, Valencia earned 99 caps for Ecuador, representing his country in the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups and several Copa América tournaments. He was known for his commitment and passion, eventually captaining the national team.
After leaving United in 2019, Valencia played briefly for LDU Quito in Ecuador and Querétaro in Mexico before retiring in 2021. Valencia is widely regarded as one of Ecuador’s greatest players, having paved the way for future Ecuadorian talents in European football. His career is celebrated for its longevity, versatility, and contributions to both Manchester United and Ecuador. |
