Biography
Being a Newton Heath reserve player brought its rewards in 1890-91. As the first team could not be bothered with an FA Cup tie on October 25th, the second string were sent instead to face their Bootle equivalents. The left-half was William Rattigan who, despite the 0-1 defeat, enjoyed his debut as well as what proved to be his last competitive match for the club.
Rattigan was listed in the reserve squad at the start of 1891-92 as well but his name did not surface again till the ultimate game of 1892-93, and for the main selection, no less. Having defeated Small Heath two days earlier to preserve their Division One status, the Heathens made five changes for a friendly with Ardwick on April 29th. A place was found for Rattigan... in goal! He stopped anything thrown at him bar three shots, one of which came from the boot of his teammate, left-back James Brown. No picture available.
