Goalkeeper or outfield player - it did not matter to Charlie Harrison, who was equally likely to perform either task on a week to week basis. As such, he was a rare specimen in Manchester United's history for, though C. Fulton admittedly executed a similar dual role before him, nobody has done so since. His best position? Harrison was once described in the Athletic News as "a goalkeeper of the first order", yet no such accolades were ever used to describe his outfield proficiency, which answers that question, then.
Charlie was born in Newton Heath but he did not begin his career with the Heathens, rather with their closest rivals, Ten Acres. He was spotted in their team from 1885-86 and for a couple of years after, in goal or at full-back. He was good enough to be selected for the Manchester and District representative XI that beat Wigan and District in March 1888. He was a joyful soul too: when the club held a supper for the players in March 1887, Charlie led the singing with a rendition of "Muldoon and the Cats"!
While still a Ten Acres player, Harrison came to Newton Heath's aid on April 30th, 1887, for a friendly against Bolton Wanderers. The Heathens lost 0-5! Regardless, he must have impressed Bolton who, a year later, picked him as their first-choice keeper as they began their Football League journey. He had performed so well in the practice matches that one paper was moved to declare "Harrison is a boxer, and he can fist out like a demon" while another described him as "a Prince of a goalkeeper, sharp as a needle and as lively as a cricket"!
Harrison played in Bolton's inaugural league game, on September 8th, 1888, when they took a 3-0 lead against Derby then conceded six goals, including the one Charlie kicked into his own goal! He played in 19 of the 22 matches that first season but lost his place five games into 1889-90. In December, Charlie joined Newton Heath who promptly put him in the front line, no less, in a friendly against Belfast Distillery on Christmas Day. From then until the end of the campaign, he also turned out in goal, at full-back and in the half-back line. This included playing in the FA Cup (against Preston's 'Invincibles'), in various Football Alliance fixtures, as well as in both the semi-final and final of the Manchester Cup, earning a winners' medal.
In September 1891, Harrison applied successfully to the FA to be reinstated as an amateur. At the time he was working as a joiner and living on Vine Street, which was a popular spot for Newton Heath's players, apparently - the likes of Alf Edge, John Earp, George Evans and Bob Milarvie also dwelled there. As for Charlie, he turned out briefly for Stockport County in 1891-92, appearing at left-back in three Combination outings before dropping to local football with Bacup (1892-93) and Rawtenstall (1893-94).
