When Aaron Longton first joined Newton Heath, the football side was still run by the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and the majority of the players worked there. This was in the spring of 1885 and his debut, on March 14th against Greenheys, was for a good cause - to raise money for the Manchester Hospital Fund. It was also a mandated appearance: four of Heath's regular starters were representing Manchester & District versus Liverpool and District.
This was Longton's only appearance of 1884-85 but, in 1885-86, he outplayed all other Heathens with 24 traced outings. He had started the campaign in midfield, turning out all along the half-back line, but he switched to the attack after the New Year and managed to bag four goals. Or more: 15 Heath goals in the Manchester Senior Cup were never traced! This competition also provided him with the highlight of his stay at North Road, for he was a member of the eleven men who defeated Manchester FC in April 1886 to earn the club their very first trophy. The 5' 5½", 10st 8lb Longton was a hard worker with "a fair shot at goal".
Aaron was also in the lineup on October 30th for the club's abortive first ever FA Cup tie (Heath scratched prior to kickoff) but, two weeks later, he played his last game for the Heathens. The winds of change were blowing through North Road in 1886-87 as a clutch of top notch Welshmen were procured to improve the standards. This brought an end to several players' careers, including Longton. He walked over and joined the next club around the corner - Ten Acres - where he was reunited with ex-Heathens like Harrison, Moran, Siddons, Haughton and Howles.
The outcasts were never able to put one over their old club, but Longton earned his reward for a solid 1886-87 campaign by being picked for the Newton Heath & District representative XI that took on mighty Blackburn Rovers in an end-of-season benefit match on May 7th, 1887.
Outside of football Aaron first made the news at eight years of age, long before Manchester United came into existence. It was Christmas 1872 when he sang at the Park Road Weslayan school recital in Chorley. He later moved to Oldham and lived at 427 Hollins Road. Throughout his footballing career, he worked as a cotton spinner at the Oak Spinning Company until he got a promotion in July 1906 and became a 'mule overlooker'! No picture available.
