Biography Matheus Cunha was born on May 27, 1999, in João Pessoa, the capital of Paraíba state in northeastern Brazil. As a child, he initially played futsal in Recife before transitioning to outdoor football, where his technical ability quickly caught the eye of scouts. After featuring at the prestigious Dallas Cup youth tournament, he was invited to join the academy of Coritiba FC in Brazil, but opted to move to Europe instead, signing with Swiss side FC Sion in July 2017 at age 18.
During his first season in Switzerland, Cunha made an immediate impact at Sion. In May 2018, he scored a hat-trick in a 4–1 victory over FC Thun, announcing himself as one of the Swiss Super League’s most promising young forwards. His blend of speed, dribbling skill, and eye for goal earned praise across Europe, and he finished his debut campaign with 12 goals in 26 league appearances.
Club Career
FC Sion (2017–2018)
After joining Sion’s senior setup in mid-2017, Cunha quickly became a starter. He made his Swiss Super League debut in September 2017 and scored his first professional goal shortly thereafter. Over the 2017/18 season, he registered 12 goals and 5 assists in 26 matches, including the aforementioned hat-trick versus Thun. His performances attracted attention from teams in Germany and Spain, and by summer 2018, Bundesliga clubs were openly monitoring his progress.
RB Leipzig (2018–2020)
On August 17, 2018, Matheus Cunha completed a €12 million transfer to RB Leipzig, signing a five-year deal. In his first Bundesliga season (2018/19), he scored 3 goals in 26 league appearances while also featuring in various cups. Although his goal tally was modest, Cunha’s versatility allowed him to play both as a winger and a second striker, often operating on the left flank to exploit his dribbling in transition. In his second season (2019/20), he improved his return to 8 goals across all competitions, including important strikes in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Hertha BSC (2020–2021)
Seeking more regular first-team football, Cunha joined Hertha BSC on August 22, 2020, in a loan move that became permanent in January 2021. During the loan spell, he scored 6 goals and contributed 4 assists in 28 Bundesliga matches, helping Hertha narrowly avoid relegation. Once his move was made permanent, he continued as a key attacking outlet, ending the 2020/21 season with 6 goals and 3 assists in 32 league appearances. His performances earned him widespread recognition in Germany as one of the league’s most dynamic attacking midfielders.
Atlético Madrid (2021–2023)
In August 2021, Cunha signed for Atlético Madrid on a five-year contract. Under manager Diego Simeone, he faced stiff competition for places, but still managed to score 8 goals in 39 La Liga appearances during the 2021/22 season. One of his most memorable moments came in April 2022, when he netted twice in a 3–0 win at Huesca. In the 2022/23 campaign, he featured 28 times across all competitions, scoring 5 times, including a vital goal in a 2–1 victory over Valencia in October 2022. Despite flashes of brilliance, Atlético’s crowded forward line led Cunha to seek a move for more playing time.
Wolverhampton Wanderers (2023–2025)
On January 29, 2023, Cunha joined Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to buy if Wolves avoided relegation. He scored his first goal for Wolves in a 2–1 win against Brighton on March 19, 2023, and ended the 2022/23 season with 3 goals in 12 league appearances, helping the club secure a midtable finish. His loan was made permanent on July 1, 2023, for a reported fee of around €30 million.
In the 2023/24 season, Cunha flourished under manager Julen Lopetegui, scoring 15 goals and providing 7 assists in 34 Premier League matches. He followed that up with an even more prolific 2024/25 campaign, registering 17 goals and 8 assists in 36 appearances, finishing as Wolves’ top scorer and earning “Player of the Season” honors. Over his two-and-a-half years at Molineux, he amassed 33 goals and 15 assists in 92 appearances across all competitions, firmly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers.
Manchester United (2025–Present)
On June 1, 2025, Manchester United triggered Cunha’s £62.5 million release clause to sign him from Wolves, marking the club’s first major summer acquisition under new manager Rúben Amorim. He agreed to a five-year contract with an option for a sixth year. United assigned him the iconic No. 10 shirt, previously worn by Marcus Rashford, indicating the level of expectation placed on him. Cunha arrived at Old Trafford having scored 17 goals in the 2024/25 Premier League season, and United’s sporting director called him a “key piece” in the club’s rebuild after a disappointing previous campaign. His move is pending visa and registration formalities, and he was expected to join Brazil’s squad for World Cup qualifiers before officially completing the transfer.
International Career
Youth Levels
Cunha represented Brazil at various youth levels. In October 2018, he made his debut for the Brazil U20 team during the CONMEBOL U-20 Championship, scoring once in 2 appearances. In June 2019, he joined the Brazil U23 squad for the Olympic qualifiers, where he scored 4 goals in 6 matches. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in summer 2021), Cunha played a crucial role in Brazil’s path to the gold medal, earning 5 caps and scoring 3 times—including a goal in the quarter-final vs. Spain. Brazil defeated Spain 2–1 in the final to claim their second consecutive Olympic gold.
Senior Team
Matheus Cunha earned his senior Brazil debut on September 3, 2021, in a 1–0 World Cup qualifying victory over Ecuador. As of June 2025, he has accumulated 13 caps and scored 1 goal. His first senior goal came in a friendly against Ghana on March 26, 2024, when he drilled home a strike in a 3–2 victory at Estádio Mineirão. Although he has not yet been named to a major tournament squad, his consistent club form in England has made him a regular inclusion in Tite’s selection mix for qualifiers and the upcoming Copa América.
Playing Style and Attributes
Versatility: Cunha is naturally right-footed but comfortable using his left. He can play as a central striker, second striker, or out on either wing.
Dribbling & Pace: One of his standout traits is his ability to take on defenders in one-on-one situations. His background in futsal contributes to tight close control in small spaces.
Finishing: He combines composure in front of goal with an instinct for finding space behind defensive lines. In the 2024/25 Premier League season, he scored 17 goals at an xG (expected goals) slightly above actual output, reflecting his clinical edge.
Link-up Play: Equally adept at playing quick one-twos with midfielders, he can drop into pockets between lines to facilitate attacking moves. His work rate also sees him press opponents high up the pitch, aligning with the proactive style favored by his coaches.
Personal Life
Cunha is married to wife Letícia, and as of mid-2025, the couple is expecting their first child. He maintains a low profile off the pitch but occasionally shares glimpses of family life on social media, where he has over 2 million followers across Instagram and Twitter.
In his spare time, he enjoys playing videogames—particularly FIFA—and frequently hosts charity livestreams to support children’s hospitals in Brazil.
His agent is Bertolucci Sports Group, which also represents several other high-profile Brazilian talents.
