Considered Newton Heath's greatest goalkeeper, Frank Barrett missed just six matches of all manner from the day he made his debut against Newcastle in September 1896 till he left four years later. In that time, he formed with fullbacks Stafford and Erentz the tightest defence in the Football League. In his last season, 1899-00, he conceded just 27 goals in 34 matches. Despite being short for a keeper!
His only fault was that he was too emotional and would often sulk away to Dundee whenever he felt his standards had dropped, such in mid-December 1899 when club secretary Alf Albut was forced to head north to retrieve him in the wee hours of a Friday night! Dundee was where Barrett was from, and he played for several teams there.
At first he was a winger with the National juvenile club in 1886 but had converted to goalie by the time he went to Johnstone Athletic in 1888. A year later, he became a member of Dundee Harp then moved to Dundee FC shortly after they joined the Scottish League in 1893-94, although Newton Heath thought they had signed him in May 1893. Barrett was so good he won two caps for Scotland (against in Ireland in 1894 and Wales in 1895) and several county call-ups. It now required £70 of Heath's dearest money to acquire him early in 1896-97.
He is remembered at Bank Street for always taking to the field kitted in a cream-coloured jersey and for chewing tobacco throughout matches.
Newton Heath's mounting financial problems forced the club to reluctantly sell Frank in May 1900 to big-spending New Brighton Tower. He was ever-present in his solitary year there before returning to Manchester to play for City in 1901-02. His debut against Stoke was abandoned with 15 minutes left due to bad weather, thus his official debut came five days later on Boxing Day against Sheffield Wednesday.
When Barrett could not keep a first-team place, he longed for a move back to Dundee, but City's asking price was too high. So he started playing for amateur side Dundee Wanderers in October 1902. Just two weeks later, City relented, and Frank was able to sign for Dundee, playing solely in their 'A' side.
In 1903, he was back in demand! Aberdeen FC were formed and wanted him in their ranks as they joined the Scottish League. By now, however, Barrett's diminishing eyesight limited his appearances, and he only turned out twice for the Dons in two seasons. Sadly, his health deteriorated rapidly that he ended up in a lengthy hospital stay. Aberdeen, Dundee and Manchester United played benefits in his name. Finally, in August 1907, he passed away in his house on Jamaica Street, Dundee, at only 35 years of age. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
