From 1893 to 1898, outside-right Bill Williams graced Everton's reserve team. His achievements ranged from earning a Liverpool Senior Cup medal in 1895 to challenging Everton's main rivals, Liverpool, to send over their best players to face him in a game of billiards in 1898! It was rare that the speedy winger made the first team, though he did mark his debut by netting past Stoke in January 1895.
Perhaps surprisingly, Williams earned a call-up to the Football League selection to face the Irish League in November 1895. Regardless, he starred in that game, grabbing two late goals to salvage a 2-2 draw. His spell with Everton eventually came to an end in April 1898, and it was a painful one: Bill suffered a brain concussion in his last match against WBA.
Shortly after, Williams was sold to Blackburn for £100 and he made his debut against his old employers, Everton, on September 2nd. In his first season at Ewood Park, Bill was a regular member of the team, playing in 24 league fixtures. In 1899-00, however, his appearances dropped to seven and he was even permitted to train daily at local side Rock Ferry. Still, he was again chosen to represent the Football League XI.
In 1900-01, Bill took to playing with Bristol Rovers in the Southern League, making a scoring debut against QPR on September 1st. That season he played 17 league and cup games, scoring five goals. However, his registration still belonged to Blackburn so he was still officially a Rovers player when Newton Heath obtained his signature in 1901.
Williams' first appearance for the Heathens was versus Gainsborough Trinity on September 7th as he partnered his old Everton teammate Alf Schofield on the right flank. Oddly, Bill was utilized as an inside-right in the opening three matches of the campaign, this experiment not proving fruitful. He was at length tried out in his usual outside-right berth in two outings in October but, when the second one resulted in a 0-5 drubbing at Southport Central in the Lancashire Senior Cup, Bill never saw the first team again. In 1902, it was reported that he had rejoined Bristol Rovers. Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless efforts & the correct information on William "Bill" Williams.
