One no-holds-barred tussle in September 1896 brought Joe Wetherell both his first-team chance with Newton Heath and the end of his association with the club. The Heathens faced Grimsby Town on September 19th in a grueling encounter in which regular keeper Joe Ridgway suffered a dislocated shoulder. Two Heathens retaliated, mind, by simultaneously charging Grimsby's custodian and sending him to the hospital!
Ridgway's injury provided Wetherell, newly signed in June 1896, with the opportunity to make his bow in the Football League two days later against Walsall. He also guarded the sticks against Small Heath on October 10th, when his mistake let a win slip into a draw.
Since Heath required an experienced goalkeeper to fill in for the injured Ridgway, they signed Scottish international Frank Barrett from Dundee, thus pushing the 5'10" Wetherell down to third choice. Struggling to even get a game for the reserves, Joe left the club the following close season. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
