After wreaking havoc as an inside-right for local Mancunian outfit Talbot FC, Frank Wedge was signed by Newton Heath towards the end of December 1896. A bank clerk by day, he remained an amateur all throughout his time at Bank Street.
His first taste of football for his new team was for the reserves on New Year's Day 1897, and that was the level at which he most often operated over the next year and a half, with a decent strike rate, it must be said.
In August 1897, Wedge was involved in Heath's preseason practice matches, playing for the 'Stripes' against the 'Whites', and he eventually got to play in two consecutive Football League fixtures later that November. With Heath missing three regulars for the trip to Leicester Fosse on the 27th, Frank was handed his debut... and he scored within one minute! The 1-1 draw was followed by a 2-1 win over Grimsby in which he again scored.
Unfortunately, Wedge was injured while playing for the second stringers versus Berry's FC in December 1897, and he did not pop up in any game for the club thereafter. Eventually, in June 1898, he moved to Chorlton-cum-Hardy where he excelled in the Lancashire Amateur League. No picture available 100% strike record. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
