As the search went on to find James McNaught's replacement during 1898-99, Robert Walker became the fifth player to be tried out by Newton Heath at centre-half. The youngster had experienced a whirlwind last few months: Morton had signed him in the 1898 summer from Glasgow side Rutherglen Glencairn (with whom he had been since they were formed in 1896), only to move him on to Notts County in early December. A month later, without kicking one competitive ball, Walker arrived at Bank Street for a month's trial.
The Scot was introduced in a friendly versus Manchester City on January 7th, 1899, in what constituted a clash of Division Two's top two outfits. Walker fared well in a 2-0 win then enjoyed a 3-0 victory versus Glossop in the league a week later. So far, so good: "the strapping fellow has a true knowledge of the game... and his headwork is excellent".
But then came a 0-2 reverse at Walsall with Robert at fault for one of the goals, in addition to giving away quite a few dangerous free-kicks. Suddenly, he was deemed "slow and a poor tackler... and not class enough for Division Two". It was a damning indictment and, once the trial was over, Walker was let go into obscurity.
