It was stated that James Vance was 19 years old when he joined Newton Heath, meaning he was only 15 when he played in the Scottish Cup for junior side Annbank in 1892-93. It obviously helped that he had grown to 5'10½" while still a teenager. James could play anywhere in the front line, and play well too - he was selected to represent Ayrshire County against Lanarkshire in December 1893.
Vance was signed by Newton Heath in January 1896, the same week they also signed a full-back named Alexander Oag from Raith Rovers. Intriguingly, on February 3rd, Oag was expected to fill in at the back against Leicester Fosse, only for two players to drop one spot back, thus creating a vacancy up front for Vance to make his debut instead. Oag never made Heath's first team after that.
James, on the other hand, appeared in ten of the season's ultimate 11 fixtures. He only got one goal and added two more in friendlies, but all three had one thing in common - they came in Heath defeats. Inevitably, he lost his regular spot for 1896-97 and, following a solitary outing in October 1896, he moved across town to Fairfield in mid-December.
His stay in England came to an end just three months later when he decided to return to his old club, Annbank. Motherwell signed him in preparation for the 1898-99 campaign but, failing to break into their team, James returned for a third spell with Annbank, again appearing in the Scottish Cup that season. He even became a committee member while still serving the first team in 1904-05. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
