Biography

Strangely, considering that in recent years Manchester United have made sure nobody else has won the FA Cup more times, the early Heathens did not show much affinity for the old competition. They did not bother entering during the first eight years of their existence; what went down in history as their first ever participation should not really count, for they scratched to Fleetwood Rangers and contested a friendly instead; and, in their fourth appearance - against Bootle Reserves on October 25th, 1890, they fielded a bunch of second string players themselves and did not bat an eyelid after losing 0-1.
William Turner was one of the men fated to make a minute entry into the club's statistical history that day, for his inclusion at centre-forward was his solitary appearance for the club.
