Scottish-born John Sneddon first emerged as a forward with Airdrieonians in the mid-1880s. In October 1887, it was reported that he had thrown his lot in with Rangers, but that move was never completed. Instead, Sneddon was picked up by Hearts as they embarked on a tour of England. When he struck twice on his debut against Blackburn Rovers on December 31st, he was signed on full time, and he served Hearts until November 1888.
John was next traced with Accrington, when he was given a trial in April 1891, possibly from Motherwell. He played once in the Football League but Accrington were struggling financially at the time and they could not keep him. Incidentally, in the 1891 census, he was boarding on Oak Street, Accrington, his occupation being a professional footballer.
Consequently, Newton Heath signed the Scot in the close season, and he became a regular member of the side in 1891-92. Operating mostly at inside-left, Sneddon appeared in 21 out of 22 Football Alliance fixtures, adding at least 24 more appearances of all other manner. It took him until his tenth outing to register his first goal - in a 5-1 FA Cup thrashing of Ardwick - but he hit a hot streak early in the New Year when he tallied seven goals in as many games.
Although Sneddon was initially retained for 1892-93 when the Heathens entered the Football League, he only played two reserve matches in September. Alas, he badly injured his shoulder in the second and struggled to recover. John soon left the club, and he might have served Leeds some time after. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
