One of the very earliest Scots to cross over to the English professional game was Robert Ramsey, who came to Great Lever in December 1884 from Dundee Our Boys. He so impressed Bolton Wanderers in a friendly in June 1885, they swiftly snapped up this centre-back who was "wonderfully clever with his head". Things did not work out, however, resulting in Ramsey moving to Bootle in January 1886.
Just three months later, Bob moved on again, this time to Burslem Port Vale for a relatively longer spell in the Potteries. This included joining neighbours Stoke to participate in the inaugural Football League campaign. Stoke finished bottom in 1888-89, and again a year later, but the consolation for Ramsay was that he had finished as their leading scorer from midfield... with four goals!
Newton Heath were impressed and duly gave him Joe Davies' shirt when the Welshman was transferred to Wolverhampton in 1890. Bob made his debut on May 10th as the Heathens lost to Preston 0-4, but that was okay - the North Enders were reigning champions. He then played a prominent role in 1890-91. Taking over the captaincy from George Evans, Ramsay appeared in all 22 Football Alliance fixtures and again finished top scorer from midfield, this time with six goals. The newspaper assessment was kind: "Besides playing a good game, Ramsey is always ready with a word of advice to teammates".
It was a surprise then when he lost his place in 1891-92, and former Stoke teammate Alf Edge was to blame: Edge took over the inside-right spot from Willie Stewart who was converted to centre-half... at Ramsey's expense. The ousted Scot loitered in the reserves at the start of the campaign, finally signing off from first-team duties on October 24th, 1891. An FA Cup tie was downgraded to a friendly when the opposition, Heywood, forfeited in advance.
Ramsey eventually hopped over to West Manchester FC, making his debut on December 5th versus Chester. However, he was too good to simply fade away, so he re-entered the Football League with Northwich Victoria in 1892-93 then returned to Port Vale halfway through 1893-94 to feature in 16 league matches. An accident to his knee brought an end to his career.
Bob had worked as a railway coach painter when living at 24 Wilton Street during his time with Newton Heath, and he continued in the same vein after retirement (bar a stint as a publican on Oldham Road), operating as a house painter in Bolton while living on Woodbine Road. Ramsey had gained a county cap during his time with Newton Heath but it was unfortunately stolen some time later. He sadly passed away at merely 44 years of age in 1910 and was buried at Tonge Cemetery. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
