After performing admirably for three years with Holywell - in the North Wales Coastal League, no less - William Owen was finally given a trial by Newton Heath on March 16th, 1898 against Grimsby Town. It was full-back Fred Erentz's benefit, but Owen benefitted too - his two "clever" goals earning him a permanent contract. Two more teammates followed shortly after (George Oare and Robert Jones) and all this money saved Holywell from extinction!
William was only 5'5" tall and weighed 9 st, but he was labeled a "swift outside-right". Unfortunately, Willie Bryant was Heath's resident outside-right throughout 1898-99, which restricted the newcomer to one mere League outing: against Small Heath on October 15th, 1898. He started brightly but was fairly anonymous thereafter as the Mancunians lost 1-4.
Just three months later, Welsh outfit Rhyl United announced they had signed Owen and that they would introduce him against Bangor on January 21st, 1899. On that day, however, the winger turned out for Crewe in the Lancashire League instead and helped himself to a brace versus Southport Central. Rhyl subsequently reported Crewe to the footballing authorities and Owen spent the next few months appearing for both sides.
Eventually, he hitched with Llanrwst in the North Wales Coast League, making his bow on October 28th, 1899. The opponents, Carnarvon Ironopolis, were best pleased: Owen missed a penalty kick! A year or so later, his form had dropped to such an extent that Llanrwst offered him to Rhyl for free, but his ex-employers were not biting!
Owen was known as "Williy New Inn" in his younger days, famed for his witty sense of humour in local socials. Later in life, he became a baker and confectioner and was still living in Blackburn in the 1950s when he was in his eighties.
