Biography

Jack Owen spent six years with Newton Heath and they fell right in the middle of the club's 24-year history. Which was appropriate - his career linked the buccaneering days of the 1880s with Heath's entry into the Football League. In those half dozen years, Jack saw it all: he appeared in every game as the Heath won the 1888-89 Football Combination; played 54 Football Alliance games (more than most) over three years; was registered by the club in their first Football League campaign (though he did not play any matches); and won three consecutive Manchester Cup medals from 1888 to 1890.
Owen was a 5'6" half-back who specialized in long throw-ins and crunching tackles, with the emphasis on 'crunching'. He once went in so rough against Sheffield Wednesday in April 1890 and got sent off, which only incited the North Road crowd - they attacked referee and opposition players alike, and even stole the umpire's cap!
Jack was a Welshman who had previously been on Chirk's books, sometimes slotting at inside-right next to his older brother Bill. After helping Chirk win the Welsh Cup in 1887, they both joined Heath, although Bill's stay was rather brief. Jack was a coal miner who worked down the pit all week then traveled to Manchester on Saturdays, starting from his debut versus Accrington on September 3rd, 1887.
He was nearly always ever present for the first five years before settling on a place in the second string in his final campaign. Shortly after joining Heath, he was selected for the Manchester & District side that faced Wigan & District in November 1887, then he won full international recognition for Wales against England in March 1892. Having moved to Manchester by that time, Owen first found lodging with Heath's secretary Edward Hole then thereafter lived at the Crown Inn at 153 Church Street, Newton Heath, eventually passing away there in September 1915.
