Despite a relatively lengthy association with Newton Heath, Thomas O'Shaughnessy always seemed to be the man behind the scenes, both during and after his playing career. From 1890 to 1894, his face was regularly seen at the club, regularly in the reserves, to be precise. He filled all positions across the front line as well as both wing-half slots.
O'Shaughnessy first played competitively for Heath on October 25th, 1890 - the day the reserve eleven took on their Bootle counterparts in the FA Cup while the first team played a friendly. He himself finally made the first team on January 2nd, 1892, for another friendly. A special one too: a Canadian touring team provided the opposition. Unluckily for Thomas, he suffered a broken leg that ended his season.
These were his only moments in the limelight for Heath, but that was fine - O'Shaughnessy had other plans for his life. Born in Wales to Irish immigrants, he arrived in Manchester when his family moved again in the mid-1870s. While on Newton Heath's books, he played cricket in the summer and attended college during winters, eventually becoming an elementary schoolteacher, a profession for which he soon left the game.
However, O'Shaughnessy remained close to the club. The well-educated individual that he was, Thomas was elected onto Heath's board in 1899, which makes him the first player in Manchester United's history to become a director for the club, in the true sense of the word (not counting the players who formed the committee in the club's formative years).
He was even re-elected to his position in the summer of 1900 - at the expense of a failed attempt to replace AH Albut as club secretary - but, when the acting directors posed for a photo that went into the programme of the famous bazaar in February 1901, Thomas was not included among the board members. This would indicate that he was no longer involved in the running of Newton Heath by then. No picture available.
