When Newton Heath's captain, Bob McFarlane, was enticed by his old club, Airdrieonians, to rejoin them in the summer of 1892, the Mancunians duly snapped up the Scottish club's other back, Andrew Mitchell, out of spite! Aged 22 years, standing 5'11" high and weighing over 12 stone, Mitchell was judged to be a superior purchase for the Heathens.
He had been spotted in Airdrie's team as early as May 1890 and, in his time there, Andrew acquired a dubious distinction... the man who gave away the very first penalty kick in football history! And in the final of the Airdrie Charity Cup too, the date being June 6th, 1891.
By the time Mitchell arrived in Manchester, he had just missed the deadline to appear in Manchester United' first ever league game (against Blackburn on September 3rd, 1892). Nonetheless, he still found his way onto the pitch... as a linesman! This was at a time when each club provided their own umpire.
Regardless, Mitchell made his debut in the very first top flight game to be staged in Manchester - versus Burnley one week later. He was "the best back on the field, stopping his opponents splendidly and rescuing his full-back partner several times". And so it proved. The newcomer went on to play in 53 consecutive outings (in all competitions) at right-back from his debut onwards until January 1894.
Highlights included winning a Manchester Senior Cup medal in April 1893 and captaining the team on several occasions. This was countered, mind, by the day during 1893-94 when he scored two own goals to help Aston Villa gain a soft victory.
After appearing in the test match defeat to Liverpool on April 28th, 1894, which confirmed Heath's drop to the Second Division, Mitchell departed to Burton Swifts. His bow came on September 1st as Crewe were thrashed 4-0, but Andrew only played a dozen matches for his new club before returning to Scotland in March 1895 to play for Gaelic FC.
