There were high hopes for George Millar when he was signed by Newton Heath in December 1894. The Scottish centre-forward had played in a junior international during 1893-94 while with his previous club, Glasgow Perthshire. The Heath management wanted him eligible to participate in the upcoming FA Cup and, to that end, specifically arranged a friendly game with Beswick on December 19th. In an easy 10-1 win, the newcomer banged a hat-trick to show that "he knew how to keep his wings together, and where to place the ball".
Millar was promptly thrown into the first team for the following Saturday's League encounter with Lincoln City. He powered a header home within ten minutes of his official debut then assisted the other two goals in a 3-0 victory. Overall, he proved he was a prolific scorer - he got four goals in the next four league matches - but he apparently lacked sufficient quality, because the management only selected him on rare occasions, including that FA Cup tie for which he was originally put in the side.
In July 1895, George moved to Chatham of the Southern League. Inevitably, he scored on his bow - two goals, in fact - against Clapton on September 7th. However, despite totaling six goals in 11 appearances, he did not remain with Chatham much longer. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
