Biography

Bob Milarvie was a mere teenager when he left Pollokshields, Glasgow, to participate in Stoke's first season in the Football League, but he quickly introduced himself with a goal and two assists in a 3-0 win over Notts County on November 24th, 1888. A very direct left winger, he played 15 league games for Stoke during 1888-89 and netted 5 goals as they finished bottom.
Derby County thought they had signed Milarvie in the 1889 summer until they received a letter from him, the gist of which was: "I saw Burslem Port Vale in reference to my private agreement with them. They will not release me without a penalty. Consequently I must ask you cancel my form with you". Of course, a peeved Derby sent Port Vale a letter to "play Milarvie at your peril"! Vale nonetheless fielded Bob in a friendly against Halliwell on September 2nd, and later told the FA they did not get said letter till halfway through the game. The authorities initially suspended Bob for the whole season. However, once he explained to them that, as a Catholic, he had been influenced by Vale's Catholic representatives, the ban was shortened to November 1st, 1889.
It was a blow to Port Vale - they had dubbed Bob "a coming, young forward of exceptional promise, who can play anywhere in the front line". Instead, he started playing for Derby on November 7th when he notched a goal in a 3-2 win over WBA. However, after 4 goals in 14 league games in 1889-90, he was on the move again...
Milarvie arrived at North Road as one of six new men in Newton Heath's lineup at the start of 1890-91, having been given a trial in May under the pseudonym 'McMorrin'. One of the new men - George Evans - was Bob's roommate in their digs at 44 Vine Street. Heath gave him a job as a cotton yarn dyer and even put him in their cricket team. More importantly, they made him first choice left winger throughout the campaign. Bob thanked them by banging braces in his first two matches (both friendlies) then appeared in 21 of the 22 Alliance fixtures. In all, he totaled 16 goals in 47 outings, including a brace in the Manchester Cup semi-final versus Stockport.
Another year... another team: Bob found his sixth home in five years when he crossed town to Ardwick for 1891-92, a move that did nothing to soothe the strained relationship between the Mancunian rivals. He scored 4 goals in 19 games in Ardwick's first season in the Alliance then took part in their first ever Football League match - against Bootle in September 1892, having recovered from being seriously stabbed while in Dumbarton that summer. Bob spent five years with Ardwick, during which they changed their name to Manchester City, his last outing coming on February 29th, 1896. Milarvie then spent a farewell season with Ashton North End, frequently scoring.
The Scot stayed in Manchester after retirement, living at 209 Stockport Road and running a pub. He briefly dabbled in the local political scene after the turn of the century and was fleetingly involved in Manchester City's board, eventually passing away in 1912 and buried at Gorton Cemetery. His son sadly followed suit a few years later on Europe's battlefields. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
