Goals from the left wing were a feature of William Mathieson's play throughout his career. He got three of them in the first half in January 1891 against Dykebar in Scottish junior football. His team at the time was Glasgow Thistle, who also fielded his younger brother, John, alongside him on occasions. Clydeside was another ex-club, but it was from Thistle that William joined Newton Heath in March 1892.
The Heathens were in the Football Alliance then and there was no shortage of rave reviews when the newcomer made his debut in a 3-3 draw with Grimsby Town: "Mathieson is unselfish, in fact too much so...plucky but light... a rare acquisition... never dallies with the ball... he shoots and centers with great accuracy". Not surprisingly, he mostly monopolized the outside-left flank for the rest of the season, netting four goals in 10 matches, including a brace in a friendly against his compatriots, Renton.
Mathieson's superb form meant he was in the lineup when Newton Heath played their opening Football League fixture against Blackburn Rovers on September 3rd, 1892. This competition soon proved such a grind, however, that he lost his place in early November to another Scot, James Colville. William never regained it, thus spending the remainder of the next two seasons in the reserve team. Admittedly, he maintained a steady goal return throughout, and even found the net on the two occasions he was restored to the league eleven in 1893-94. However, the damning statistic remains that he was never on the winning side for Heath in the First Division.
In the summer of 1894, William was allowed to enroll for local side Fairfield, making his debut on September 1st against Accrington. He spent the next three seasons on and off with the club where at times three of the five forwards were ex-Heathens, Mathieson having been joined by Adam Carson and Tommy Fitzsimmons. It has erroneously been reported that he played for Rotherham Town during 1895-96, but he actually returned frequently to Newton Heath to help out the second eleven. After Fairfield, William threw his lot in with Chorley in 1897 and South Shore in 1898. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
