Biography
Tyrell Johannes Chicco Malacia was born on 17 August 1999 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A technically gifted and energetic left-back, Malacia is known for his pace, determination, aggressive defending and willingness to support attacks down the left flank. His rapid rise through Dutch football earned him recognition as one of the Eredivisie's most promising defenders before securing a move to the Premier League.
Malacia joined the Feyenoord youth academy at the age of nine and progressed through every level of the club's development system. He made his senior debut in December 2017 during a UEFA Champions League victory over Napoli, quickly establishing himself as one of the brightest young full-backs in Dutch football. Over the following five seasons he made 137 first-team appearances, helping Feyenoord win the 2017–18 KNVB Cup and the 2018 Johan Cruyff Shield. He also played a key role in Feyenoord's run to the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League Final, earning a place in the competition's Team of the Season for his outstanding performances.
In July 2022, Malacia became the first signing of Erik ten Hag's Manchester United reign when he joined the club from Feyenoord. The transfer was viewed as an important addition to strengthen competition at left-back, with Malacia impressing supporters through his work rate, fearless tackling and commitment whenever called upon. He made his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion before producing an eye-catching display in United's victory over Liverpool later that month. During his first season at Old Trafford he featured regularly in domestic and European competitions and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 EFL Cup, ending the club's six-year wait for major silverware.
Unfortunately, Malacia's progress was severely disrupted by injury. A serious knee problem required multiple operations and sidelined him for well over a year, making his rehabilitation one of the longest injury recoveries experienced by a Manchester United player in recent seasons. His determination eventually saw him return to first-team football, but opportunities became increasingly limited as the squad evolved and competition for places intensified.
Seeking regular football, Malacia spent part of the 2024–25 season on loan with PSV Eindhoven, where he contributed to the club's successful Eredivisie title-winning campaign. The loan provided valuable first-team minutes following his lengthy rehabilitation and helped him rebuild both fitness and confidence before returning to Manchester United.
On the international stage, Malacia represented the Netherlands at every youth level before making his senior debut in September 2021. His composure, athleticism and defensive intelligence established him as a dependable option for the Dutch national team.
As of 30 June 2026, Malacia's contract with Manchester United has officially expired, making him a free agent. United confirmed earlier in the year that he would leave the club when his deal came to an end, bringing to a close a four-year spell at Old Trafford. Although injuries prevented him from fulfilling his full potential in England, he departs with the respect of supporters for his professionalism, resilience and commitment during an exceptionally difficult period of his career.Malacia joined the Feyenoord youth academy at the age of nine and progressed through every level of the club's development system. At just 26 years of age, Malacia still has many years ahead of him at the highest level. His experience in the Eredivisie, Premier League, European competition and international football, combined with his proven defensive qualities and attacking instincts from full-back, make him an attractive prospect for clubs seeking an experienced yet still developing left-sided defender.
