Quantity over quality - that seemed to be Newton Heath's recruitment strategy for the 1898-99 season. As necessitated by a worsening financial condition, the club picked up a host of relative unknowns from relatively unknown places, including a centre-forward who impressed on the local scene with Tonge then Hurst Ramblers. The paperwork said Edwin Lee but, in footballing circles, they called him "Neddy".
From a very young age Lee worked as a twiner in the cotton mill, and he would continue to do so for the rest of his life. However, for a run of ten games, he was Newton Heath's hottest property. Not initially. One of the last of the new men to make the breakthrough, Neddy spent much of the season with the reserves. Yet a staggering scoring record for the stiffs - at least 23 goals in 27 traced outings - proved his pedigree. Eventually he got called up in spring when the management finally got fed up with regular spearhead Henry Boyd's shenanigans. Lee made his league debut at Lincoln City on March 25th, 1899, then grabbed four goals in three straight April wins that propelled the club to fourth place.
Lee also scored in the Healey Cup final against Manchester City as well as in the opening match of the 1899-00 season, but he lost his spot after three games as Heath tried out several new centre-forwards. He had to wait seven months for one last appearance - against Middlesbrough in April 1900 - after which he disappeared from the club.
Neddy resurfaced in September 1903 when he hooked up with his hometown club Hyde St. George's as a player-coach. They were embarking on their introductory campaign in the Lancashire Combination Division Two and Lee found a novel way to make the news: he was sent off in January 1904 for punching a Barrow player, earning a month's suspension and having to pay the referee's expenses! Nonetheless, Neddy continued to serve St. George's - sometimes even at centre-half - until they were absorbed by Hyde FC in 1906, at which point he saddled up with this new club.
