Biography
Denis Law was one of the greatest goalscorers in the history of Manchester United and Scottish football. Renowned for his bravery, skill, determination and extraordinary eye for goal, he became a legendary figure at Old Trafford during the 1960s and remains one of the club's most celebrated players.
Born in Aberdeen on 24 February 1940, Law grew up in humble surroundings and developed a passion for football from an early age. Despite being small in stature as a youngster, his fierce competitive spirit and natural goalscoring ability quickly marked him out as a future star.
Law began his professional career with Huddersfield Town under former Scotland international Bill Shankly. His performances attracted widespread attention and in 1960 he joined Manchester City. After just one season at Maine Road, he became British football's first £100,000 player when Italian club Torino signed him in 1961.
Although his time in Italy was challenging, Law returned to England in 1962 when Sir Matt Busby brought him to Manchester United. The transfer proved to be one of the most significant signings in the club's history.
At Old Trafford, Law formed part of the famous "United Trinity" alongside fellow legends George Best and Bobby Charlton. Together, they helped restore Manchester United to the summit of English football following the tragedy of the Munich Air Disaster.
Law's impact was immediate. A spectacular goalscorer capable of scoring with either foot or his head, he thrilled supporters with his acrobatic finishing, fearless style and relentless desire to win. His celebrations became iconic, and his popularity with supporters earned him the nickname "The King."
In 1963, Law helped Manchester United win the FA Cup, ending the club's lengthy wait for major silverware following Munich. He subsequently played a key role in First Division title-winning campaigns in 1964-65 and 1966-67.
The pinnacle of his individual career came in 1964 when he became the first and only Scottish player to win the Ballon d'Or. During that remarkable year he scored an astonishing 46 goals in all competitions for Manchester United and Scotland, establishing himself as one of the finest footballers in the world.
Injuries increasingly affected Law during the later years of his United career, and he missed the club's historic 1968 European Cup Final victory over Benfica. Nevertheless, his contribution to the success of Sir Matt Busby's side was immense.
After leaving Manchester United in 1973, Law returned to Manchester City. His final season included the famous back-heel goal against United at Old Trafford in April 1974. Contrary to popular myth, that goal did not mathematically relegate Manchester United, although it became one of the most memorable moments of his career.
Across two spells in Manchester, Law established himself as one of Britain's greatest-ever forwards. For Manchester United he made 404 appearances and scored 237 goals, making him the club's third-highest goalscorer of all time behind only Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton.
Internationally, Law enjoyed a distinguished career with Scotland. He won 55 caps and scored 30 goals for his country, a tally that made him Scotland's joint-leading goalscorer for many years. He represented Scotland at the 1974 FIFA World Cup and remains one of the nation's most revered sporting figures.
In recognition of their extraordinary contribution to Manchester United, statues of Denis Law, George Best and Bobby Charlton stand outside Old Trafford. Law was also honoured with a separate statue at Aberdeen Sports Village in his hometown.
Denis Law passed away on 17 January 2025 at the age of 84. Tributes poured in from across the football world as supporters, players and clubs remembered one of the game's true greats. His legacy endures through his remarkable goalscoring record, his place in the United Trinity and his status as one of the finest footballers ever to wear the red shirt of Manchester United.
To generations of supporters, Denis Law will forever be remembered as "The King" – a fearless striker whose passion, charisma and goals helped define one of the most glorious eras in Manchester United's history.
