1892-93 was a season full of Scots, as far as Newton Heath were concerned, and one of them was Joe Kinloch, a youthful right winger. He had joined St. Mirren in October 1891 from 2nd Linthouse and played six league matches obtaining one goal, an important one too: the winner in a 3-2 victory over Third Lanark. He also scored against Celtic in the Scottish Cup. He had fans in the local press too: "Kinloch is a beautiful player. He takes up the pass with great accuracy and off like a deer along the wing. He never keeps the ball too long but centres well. His shooting is very accurate."
On October 11th, 1892, Kinloch signed for Newton Heath and made his bow in the reserve team that beat North Meols 3-1 on the 22nd, thanks to one goal from the new lad. The following weekend, Joe found himself in the first team's forward line for the trip to Nottingham Forest. He crossed well and was involved in a couple of important incidents. First, he was collared around the neck and pulled to the ground by his marker, thus earning a free-kick. Willie Stewart stepped up and slammed it into the net directly, only for the referee to disallow it for being 'indirect'. Undeterred, Kinloch then centred for Alf Farman to score and secure a 1-1 draw. This was a great achievement - Heath only collected three points from their First Division travels all season.
Kinloch, however, was deemed "not up to league form" and was returned to the reserves where he appeared frequently throughout the season. At length he left the club in June 1893. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
