Playing for Ayr Parkhouse in junior football, Scottish inside-right William Kennedy enjoyed an impressive 1894-95 campaign. He helped Parkhouse win two charity cups as well as reach the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup. This was good enough for Newton Heath who signed Kennedy in the summer of 1895 then watched him make a superb introduction: two goals in a friendly against Fairfield followed by another two on his league debut versus Crewe on September 7th.
William continued with his steady form throughout 1895-96, netting 11 league goals to finish as second top scorer behind Joe Cassidy, and he actually benefitted from Joe's mid-season injury to finish as the overall leading marksman with 19 goals, including friendlies. His 45 appearances were also the most by any Heathen during that campaign.
It was thus disappointing when Kennedy lost his place to newcomer Rimmer Brown for 1896-97. He was consigned solely to the reserve team bar one final run-out - against Gainsborough Trinity in October - after which both he and Brown were sold to Stockport County. Kennedy was "a little stiff" on his debut versus Southport Central on December 12th, 1896, but he proceeded to play 19 games for County in the Lancashire League that season, claiming 3 goals.
In 1897-98, William moved again, this time returning to Scotland to don Greenock Morton's colours. He appeared regularly in their Second Division side that season as well as in a couple of Scottish Cup ties. However, his name was less frequently spotted during 1898-99 and even less after he was reinstated as an amateur in 1899. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
