Biography

Signed from Tonge FC in 1901, local lad Samuel Johnson was first introduced in Newton Heath's colours on January 19th for the reserves' fixture with Accrington Stanley. In a stay of nearly two years at the club, the inside-forward was mostly consigned to the second string where he showed an occasional eye for goal.
Johnson's unique appearance in the first team took place on March 20th, 1901, at inside-right when Alf Schofield was missing from the lineup against Leicester Fosse. In windy conditions Sam was prominent in the first half but struggled in the second as the Heathens lost 2-3.
In December 1901, Johnson went on a trial at Barnsley as an amateur but could not break into their first team, making a scoring appearance for the reserve side against Wath FC. So he returned to Bank Street for nearly another year, finally joining Heywood United in October 1902. He made his debut for them on November 8th in a Lancashire Combination fixture versus Nelson.
Nelson were his next team, incidentally, as he arrived in the summer of 1903 for a brief stay. He was soon with Hyde St. George's and, by January 1904, he had moved again, this time to Colne FC, another Lancashire Combination side. By now converted into a centre-half, Sam made his debut against Rossendale United on January 30th. He went on to serve them impressively enough that he secured a return to the Football League with Blackpool for 1905-06. He struck on his debut and made 34 league appearances in that campaign.
However, Johnson was back at Colne then sampled life with Exeter City and Coventry City, finally spending a year with Division Two side Leeds City in 1911-12. A mere seven games and one goal were his final statistics in senior football. Picture thanks to the hard & appreciated work of Charbel Boujaoude. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
