Biography

Hailing from a family with a considerable pedigree - one of his footballing uncles was a Scottish international - John Gourlay had one main task when he arrived at Bank Street in February 1899: the 12-stone specimen was entrusted with filling the void left by James McNaught in the centre of Newton Heath's midfield. Five men had already failed during 1898-99, and John, unfortunately, would be the sixth. A further two would give it a try before Billy Griffiths would finally succeed.

Gourlay got to play twice for Heath, and they came in the space of 5 days. He faced Aston Villa in Joe Cassidy's benefit game on February 14th then Loughborough in a Division Two encounter. Although Heath drew the first game and won the second, John was deemed slow and overly physical. He was released at the end of the campaign.

As much as his contribution to the club's history was minimal, the case was opposite when it came to Annbank. Having started with them circa 1895, Gourlay returned to the club and remained a mainstay of the team until 1911. In this time, he went from playing alongside his uncle to lining up with his cousins! John was granted a benefit match in April 1911 when Annbank welcomed a Glasgow Rangers XI. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
