From the opening game of the 1884-85 campaign, on October 11th, until November 1889, over 160 matches were accounted for Isaiah James Gotheridge with Newton Heath, but there were probably a dozen more, for he was a consistent performer on the left wing throughout. In that time, 60 goals were credited to his name but, again, there were probably a dozen more too, for he was a prolific wingman with an outstanding 40% scoring rate.
James joined Newton Heath when they had not yet begun participating in the Manchester Cup and, by the time he kicked his last ball for them, they had progressed into a Football Alliance club. He was one of Heath's first batch of professionals - after Tom Hay and Jack Powell, and along with John Mitchell, Heber Davies and Charles Felton. Gotheridge was twice picked for the Manchester & District team, and he appeared in 5 consecutive Manchester Cup finals from 1885 to 1889, winning three of them.
In addition to playing for Newton Heath's cricket team in the summer, James was prone to getting his name in the papers for the wrong reasons, both on and off the pitch. In November 1886, for instance, two of his factory coworkers were given three months of hard labour in jail for "unlawfully wounding" James. And, in November 1889, the FA handed him a three-month ban for his colourful choice of words to the referee in an ill-tempered Football Alliance match at Walsall Town Swifts.
The suspension actually brought an end to James' stay at North Road, the Heathens reluctantly willing to lose their long-time servant rather than the club itself suffer a heavier punishment. He finished the 1889-90 season with Heywood then served West Manchester in 1890-91. Stockport County was his next stop in 1891-92 when he scored 2 goals in 12 Combination outings. He especially relished meeting his old Heathen pals for he notched one goal against their first team and a hat-trick past their reserves.
At the time, Gotheridge was living on Ajax Street in Newton Heath and working as a brass finisher. However, he later moved to Preston and found employment as a pipe fitter. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
