When Newton Heath's deteriorating finances forced them to offload Willie Bryant to Blackburn Rovers in April 1900, they introduced George Foley in his place on the right wing. Foley had been with Ashford FC in the East Kent League for a couple of years until both he and Gilbert Godsmark were recommended to the club by ex-Heathen Bob Donaldson, now playing for Ashford.
Foley was signed on February 8th and at first languished in the reserves until he got this first-team chance on March 17th, against Barnsley. Partnering his former teammate Godsmark on the right flank, they terrorized the opposition left-back and helped create one of the goals in a 3-0 triumph. He was selected in seven of the last nine matches of the season, and he even got on the scoresheet when Leicester were thrashed 5-0 in April.
Ultimately, however, Newton Heath obtained Alf Schofield to occupy the outside-right flank for 1900-01, and Foley - now deemed surplus to requirements - was not re-signed. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
