Despite a fairly mediocre career, David Fitzsimmons could claim a couple of notches on his bedpost: he and his older brother, Tommy, were the first siblings to play league football for Manchester United, and he himself was only the second player ever (after Joe Cassidy) to have two separate spells with the club in the Football League era.
Much like Tommy, David came to Newton Heath from Annbank in Ayrshire where he had played in the early part of the 1890s. He was a sturdy right-half who never shied from putting in the effort. His debut came on September 7th, 1895, as Crewe were crushed 5-0, and he actually missed a mere three league outings in 1895-96. David even found his scoring touch twice in the local competitions.
Newton Heath's financial struggles forced David's release in the 1896 close season, with Fairfield picking him up. Tommy was a teammate at the time and the brothers eventually left together in October 1897 when Fairfield dropped out of the Lancashire League. Chorley was their next home until August 1898. That was when they took their double act to Wigan County and assisted them to win their first ever trophy: the Rawcliffe Charity Cup in 1899.
Ironically, Newton Heath's continuing financial strife now meant the best they could do was re-sign the younger Fitzsimmons, David returning to Bank Street "on the heavy side". Unfortunately, he was only used in four first-team matches throughout 1899-00, a mere two of which were in the league. David's last outing was a friendly versus Manchester City on New Year's Day 1900 in which he scored, but he soon disappeared altogether from first class football. He later reappeared in Annbank's first team from 1902-03 to 1904-05 with another brother, Daniel. No picture available. David Fitzsimmons is one of the few sets of brothers to play for Heath or United, David's brother is Thomas Fitzsimmons. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
