One of Newton Heath's better players in the mid-1880s was John Earp, who was twice called up for the Manchester & District selection during 1885-86. He was speedy enough to finish second in the club members' 120-yard race at the 1888 athletic sports, and he was known to liven games up "with a series of fine dribbles".
Earp first appeared in Heath's colours in a frenzied 5-4 triumph over West Manchester in March 1885 when he obtained one of the goals, then he added another the following month to help defeat Dalton Hall in the Manchester Cup semi-final. Alas, he only earned a losers' medal in the final. At the time, John turned out in the centre-forward berth but, in 1885-86, he demonstrated his versatility by playing all across the front line. His reward was a winners' medal in the Manchester Cup on this occasion.
Midway through 1886-87, Earp was converted into a right-half, and he was nearly ever-present until the end of the season, appearing in the club's defeat to West Manchester in the local cup final. Although he had become a bit-part player in 1887-88, he did make a comeback on the right wing in spring, just in time to collect another Manchester Cup winners' gong. That summer, however, he crossed over for a brief spell with adjacent neighbours, Newton Heath Central.
Soon after, John retired from first-class football but continued to live at 63 Vine Street in Newton Heath while working as a coach painter at the railway company. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude. |
