Originally with Dundee Our Boys, John Dow was part of that club's merger with Dundee East End to form Dundee FC. In their inaugural league campaign in 1893-94, however, the 5'9", 12-stone full-back was a bit part player, appearing in only 3 league and cup matches. Still, he did enough to impress Newton Heath, who signed him as an amateur in February 1894.
Interestingly, when Dow made his Heath bow - against Bolton on March 24th - he was given the alias MJ Woods while still on trial. In the following season, he became a regular member of the team... at centre-forward! Dow struck braces in two of the first three league matches and added a couple more goals in friendlies that he had six goals by the end of September.
This was the end of his hot streak, unfortunately, and, as the season went on, he eventually got moved to right-back as John McCartney's replacement after Joe Cassidy returned to the club. Consequently Dow appeared in 19 consecutive outings stretching until mid-November 1895. Alas, he lost his place in February 1896 and only added six games of all manner until the season's end.
Dow seemingly hit a low point in his career at this time. He had a month's trial at Glossop North End in October 1896 but, after a verdict of "big and fairly fast centre-forward, but lacks cleverness", he was given back his forms and released. John spent some time at Fairfield early in 1897-98 before finally resurrecting his career with Luton Town. In fact, he was installed club captain and played 56 league games in 1898-99 and 1899-00, spending some time out after injuring himself badly - against Newton Heath, of all people - in November 1899.
In 1900-01, he enjoyed a successful season with Middlesbrough but a less productive second season led to him moving to West Ham in the Southern League. He made his debut versus Reading early in 1892-93 but was released in April 1903 after 14 league and cup matches. Dow then returned to Luton Town, who were now a Southern League outfit, and served them until he retired in 1905.
Incidentally, John was a decent cricketer, especially starring for Manchester Clifford in the mid-1890s. Up to advent of World War Two, he owned a shop in Luton where the walls displayed old photos of his earlier sporting days. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
