The only times John Donnelly's name popped up in Newton Heath's matches were on the occasions that the reserve team players were summoned en masse to fulfill a cup obligation. Thus, the striker earned a debut on October 1890 when the Swifts were tasked with contesting an FA Cup tie, no less, against the might of Bootle's Reserves. Trotting out on the left flank, Donnelly failed to capitalize on his opportunity as the disinterested Heathens lost 0-1.
John was next traced in a reserve fixture versus West Manchester before again being part of the second string when they deputized for the first team in a Manchester Senior Cup tie with Hurst in February 1891. About 500 people witnessed a 2-2 draw with a side that used to be a big Heath rival in the mid 1880s. Surprisingly, the tie was awarded to the Heathens instead of a replay being contested, but John did not take any further part in the club's march to the final.
