Ángel Di María is a highly skilled Argentine footballer known for his speed, creativity, and versatility as a winger and attacking midfielder. Widely regarded as one of the best wingers of his generation, Di María has had a successful club career with some of the biggest teams in Europe, including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), and Manchester United. He has also been a key figure in Argentina’s national team, playing pivotal roles in major international tournaments, including their 2021 Copa América and 2022 FIFA World Cup triumphs.
Early Career and Rise at Benfica
Di María began his professional career at Rosario Central in Argentina before moving to Benfica in 2007, where he quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in European football. At Benfica, Di María's speed, dribbling, and ability to play on either wing made him a standout player.
Di María helped Benfica win the Primeira Liga in the 2009–10 season, establishing himself as one of Europe’s top wingers and earning a move to Real Madrid. Di María’s big break came when he signed for Real Madrid in 2010, joining one of the biggest clubs in the world. Under José Mourinho and later Carlo Ancelotti, Di María thrived, becoming a key part of Madrid’s attack and winning several major trophies.
Di María played a vital role in Real Madrid’s 2014 Champions League victory, where he was named Man of the Match in the final against Atlético Madrid. His driving runs and creativity from midfield were crucial in helping Madrid secure their historic La Décima (10th Champions League title). Di María also won two Copa del Rey titles during his time at Madrid, further establishing himself as one of the world’s best wide players.
In 2014, Di María made a high-profile move to Manchester United for a British record transfer fee of £59.7 million. His arrival was seen as a statement signing, as United looked to rebuild under manager Louis van Gaal. Despite a promising start, Di María’s time at Old Trafford was short-lived, and he left after just one season.
Di María started his Manchester United career in excellent form, scoring a memorable lobbed goal against Leicester City and providing several assists in his early matches. Despite early promise, Di María struggled to adapt to the Premier League and found it difficult to maintain his form, particularly after suffering injuries and a burglary at his home. After 32 appearances and 4 goals, he was sold to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in 2015.
After leaving Manchester United, Di María signed for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), where he rediscovered his best form and became a key player in one of Europe’s top teams. At PSG, he formed part of a star-studded attack alongside players like Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi.
In 2022, Di María signed for Juventus, seeking a new challenge in Serie A. Despite being in the later stages of his career, Di María continues to contribute at the highest level, bringing his vast experience and creative abilities to the Italian club.
International Career with Argentina
Di María has been a vital player for the Argentina national team, making over 130 appearances and scoring numerous important goals. He played key roles in several major tournaments, including the 2021 Copa América and 2022 FIFA World Cup. At the time Di Maria was the clubs record signing of £59.7m |
