Biography
Roy Eric Carroll was born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, on 30 September 1977. A strong, athletic and courageous goalkeeper, he represented Manchester United between 2001 and 2005, winning the Premier League and FA Cup during his four seasons at Old Trafford.
Carroll began playing with local Northern Irish clubs Fivemiletown United and Ballinamallard United before moving to England to join Hull City as a trainee in 1995. He made 50 appearances in all competitions for Hull before Wigan Athletic signed him for a club-record fee of approximately £350,000 in April 1997.
He developed into one of the Football League’s most highly regarded young goalkeepers at Wigan. Carroll helped the Latics win the Football League Trophy in 1999 and was selected in the PFA Second Division Team of the Year for 1999/2000. His performances attracted Manchester United, who signed him for approximately £2.5 million in July 2001.
Carroll made his United debut on 26 August 2001 in a 1–1 Premier League draw away to Aston Villa. Initially serving as understudy to Fabien Barthez, he made 10 appearances during his first season and recorded his first United clean sheet in a 5–0 Premier League victory over Derby County.
The Northern Irishman continued to compete with Barthez during the 2002/03 campaign. Carroll made ten league appearances as United recovered from a difficult start to overhaul Arsenal and win the Premier League championship. Those appearances were enough to earn him a league winners’ medal.
The arrival of American goalkeeper Tim Howard in 2003 provided further competition. Although Howard was initially first choice, Carroll continued to feature regularly and was part of the squad that won the 2003 Community Shield. He also received an FA Cup winners’ medal in May 2004 after replacing Howard during the closing stages of United’s 3–0 final victory over Millwall at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.
Carroll enjoyed his longest run in the United side during the 2004/05 season, when he and Howard alternated as Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-choice goalkeeper. His time at Old Trafford is inevitably associated with the controversial match against Tottenham Hotspur on 4 January 2005. Carroll mishandled Pedro Mendes’s long-range attempt and pulled the ball back into play after it had crossed the goal line, but neither the referee nor his assistant awarded the goal. The incident became one of the most frequently discussed examples supporting the future introduction of goal-line technology.
He also played in United’s 2005 FA Cup final against Arsenal. Carroll kept a clean sheet throughout the match and extra time, but United were defeated 5–4 in the penalty shootout after dominating much of the contest.
Carroll left Manchester United when his contract expired in the summer of 2005, having been unable to secure assurances that he would become the club’s permanent first-choice goalkeeper. He made 72 competitive appearances for United and kept 38 clean sheets.
West Ham United signed Carroll shortly after his Old Trafford departure. He began the 2005/06 season as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, but a back injury requiring surgery ruled him out of the latter stages of the campaign, including West Ham’s FA Cup final against Liverpool. Personal difficulties and the emergence of Robert Green subsequently limited his opportunities.
After leaving West Ham, Carroll had spells with Rangers and Derby County before moving abroad to join Danish club Odense in 2009. He made an immediate impression in Denmark and was named the country’s Goalkeeper of the Year after only a few months with the club.
Carroll later revitalised his career in Greece with OFI Crete and Olympiacos. His Olympiacos debut was particularly memorable: introduced as a substitute against Rubin Kazan after the starting goalkeeper was dismissed, Carroll saved a penalty with his first touch for the club. He helped Olympiacos win the Greek championship and two Greek Cups before returning to England with Notts County in 2014.
In 2016, Carroll joined Linfield and added further honours to his career, including two Northern Irish Premiership titles and the Irish Cup. After later representing FC Mindwell and Dungannon Swifts, he made a brief final appearance for his former youth club Ballinamallard United in January 2023 and subsequently confirmed his retirement.
Carroll made his senior Northern Ireland debut against Thailand in May 1997. Although he spent many years competing with Maik Taylor for the goalkeeping position, he eventually collected 45 international caps. He returned to the national side following a six-year absence and was selected for Northern Ireland’s squad at UEFA Euro 2016. His final appearance came in 2017, completing an international career that spanned 20 years.
Remembered as a wholehearted and resilient goalkeeper, Roy Carroll experienced considerable success both in Britain and overseas. His Manchester United career brought major domestic honours, while the longevity of his playing career and his recovery from well-documented personal difficulties demonstrated admirable determination.
