For the longest time, James Caine's league career had been attributed to a fictional player named James Cairns, when it should have belonged to this Ardwick Lads Club product instead. The local-born half-back or full-back had joined Ardwick (now Manchester City) in March 1892. Although he spent two years with them, he only appeared in one competitive match - a Division Two tussle with Newcastle United on October 21st, 1893.
Caine moved across town to Newton Heath in the 1894 close season but also played just one League match for them: in the injury crisis of Easter 1895 when, in desperate need for a full-back, Heath had used their centre-forward, Donaldson, in defence. Thus, on April 15th, 1895, he occupied the left-back berth for the trip to leaders Bury.
Generally, Caine was a reserve player who filled in at both right-back and left-back throughout the 1894-95 season, even turning out as goalkeeper a couple of times in December.
Eventually, Newton Heath decided this was the best position for him. They gave Caine a professional contract in March 1897 and kept him on the books, if not necessarily in the limelight. James finally reemerged again in May 1898 in a first-team friendly against Gainsborough Trinity on the last day of the season. He performed well, only conceding late on as the Heathens triumphed 2-1.
Caine thus became the second eleven's regular custodian throughout 1898-99 as they competed in the Lancashire Combination, but he was no longer at the club after that, having possibly moved to Tonge FC then Hyde in the summer of 1902.
Thanks to the tireless work of Charbel Boujaoude who found evidence of James Caine in Newspaper Match Reports, James Caine was previously listed as James Cairns (1894-1895). No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
