Biography
Robert Beale was an English professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Newton Heath’s successor, Manchester United, during the early 20th century. Though his spell at Old Trafford was brief, Beale is remembered as part of the group of dependable stoppers who helped stabilise the club during its formative years in the Football League.

Early Life and Career
Beale was born in Maidstone, Kent, on 8th January 1884. Like many young players of his era, he developed his footballing skills in the southern counties before being recruited into the professional game. His early promise as a goalkeeper soon brought him opportunities at a higher level joining Maidstone United, Brighton & Norwich City.

Manchester United Career
Beale joined Manchester United from Norwich City in 1912 for £275, after deal was struck with the Canaries' as Manchester United's directors had placed both regular custodians Harry Moger & Hugh Edmonds on the transfers list. Beale provided reliable cover when called upon, making his debut and keeping a clean sheet on 02/09/1912 v Woolwich Arsenal at Highbury during a League Division One match.

Beale made 112 appearances for the club and kept 35 clean sheets as custodian from 1912 to 1919, his career was disrupted by the Great War before he was transferred to Gillingham, 07/1919. He however again turned up in Manchester playing an occasional game for the reserves.

Later Career
After leaving Manchester United, Robert Beale continued his football career with other clubs, including Arsenal (war time guest) & Gillingham, where he added further experience to his professional journey. His service at United, however, remains a key chapter, linking him to one of football’s most famous clubs during its rise to prominence.
