Biography

William "Bill" Bainbridge was an English professional footballer who played as a forward. Born in Gateshead, County Durham, he began his football journey with Ashington. His career was interrupted by the Second World War, during which he played for Hartlepool United.

Post-war, Bainbridge signed with Manchester United from Ashington, 12/1944, despite scoring on his debut v Accrington Stanley on 09/01/1946 at Maine Road during a 5-1 FA Cup 3rd Round 2nd Leg win, he made only one official appearance for the club. In May 1946, he transferred to Bury.

In November 1948, Bainbridge joined Tranmere Rovers, where he made a significant impact. Over six seasons, he played 168 league matches and scored 63 goals, becoming a key player for the team.

After his tenure at Tranmere, Bainbridge played for Stafford Rangers and later Macclesfield Town, where he scored 21 goals in 32 appearances during the 1956-1957 season.

Bill Bainbridge passed away in Chester in 1966 at the age of 44.
