Biography

Michael Appleton, born on December 4, 1975, in Salford, Greater Manchester, is an English football coach and former professional player. He began his football journey as a youth player at Manchester United, signing his first professional contract with the club in 1994. During his time at United, Appleton made two first-team appearances: his debut in a League Cup match against Swindon Town in October 1996 and a subsequent appearance against Leicester City.

In search of regular first-team football, Appleton had loan spells at Wimbledon, Lincoln City, and Grimsby Town, where he gained valuable experience. In 1997, he transferred to Preston North End, making over 100 appearances and playing a key role in their promotion to Division One in 2000. He later joined West Bromwich Albion in 2001. Unfortunately, a severe knee injury in 2001 led to his early retirement from professional football in 2003.

Transitioning into coaching, Appleton held various managerial positions, including roles at Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United, and Lincoln City. In 2024, reports indicated that Manchester United was considering appointing Appleton to a key role within the club, leveraging his extensive experience and familiarity with the club's culture.
