Alphonso "Alf" Ainsworth was an English footballer plying as an inside forward. Born in Manchester, England, he began his football career with Ashton United in the Cheshire County League. In 1933, Ainsworth joined Manchester United as an amateur and signed his first professional contract on February 13, 1934. He made his debut for Manchester United on 03/03/1934, during a home tie against Bury. During his tenure with the club, his Manchester United career was brief only making two first-team appearances.

Ainsworth transferred to New Brighton in 09/1935, where he became a significant player, making 150 appearances and scoring 39 goals before the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served as a guest player for several clubs, including Accrington Stanley, Bury, Rochdale, Southport, and Oldham Athletic, participating in wartime leagues. After the war, Ainsworth re-registered with New Brighton, adding nine goals in 28 appearances. In December 1947, he joined Congleton Town, where he played until his retirement.

Alf Ainsworth passed away on April 25, 1975, in Rochdale, England.
