Biography

It was in the mid-1880s that Joe Denman emerged as a decent right-back in South Bank. First he served South Bank Black Watch, followed by South Bank Wednesday, and finally South Bank FC. He spent five years with the latter, by the end of which he had been elevated to deputy captain. Denman also earned representative honours, playing for Cleveland versus East Riding in October 1889.
He arrived at Newton Heath in March 1891 and instantly assumed John Mitchell's right fullback slot, playing in 10 out of the last 11 matches. He only missed the Manchester Senior Cup final, for which he was ineligible, but at least he got to play in a couple of Football Alliance encounters. Denman even turned out for Newton Heath's cricket team that summer.
Unfortunately, the club then decided to sign Bob McFarlane for the right-back position in 1891-92, thus demoting Denman to the reserves, where he was installed as captain. He was limited to just 11 outings in the first team that season, most coming in the winter when McFarlane was injured. The highlight was on December 5th when Denman filled in as an emergency inside-right in an FA Cup tie with Blackpool.
In the 1892 close season, Denman headed back to the northeast and hooked up with Darlington. At first, things went great: his debut was in a 9-1 win over Bishop Auckland on September 3rd, then he was even selected for England North versus Scotland North, though selection was limited to a few clubs from the area! However, Joe soon started to struggle in the Northern League and, after repetitive criticism in the papers for his "weakness at the back", he quickly lost his place. No picture available.
